Watching Golf Pros Struggle

Change or Walk Away (or Drive On)

In one of the most moving and powerful golf ads that I have seen in a long time, Lindy Duncan shares the turning point of her career during the final round of the 2022 LPGA Qualifying School tournament. She breaks down on how she made an 8 on the final hole. She shares how much of a devastating moment it was for her. At the crossroads of her early LPGA career, she thought had cost her her entire career.

We can only imagine the devastation such a moment had on Duncan and that pivotal point in her early golf career. Those of us who have labored hard on a tricky hole just to nab a snowman know good and well that it feels like a punch in the gut when you have to say it out loud.

While Grace Kim said that she “intentionally aimed for the bunkers instead of the greens on multiple holes,” tournament officials had to penalize Carlota Ciganda two strokes for her slow play during Round 3. What was once a “routine par” on hole #13 now has become a double bogey in the record books. Even in hindsight, no one wants to see this happen to pros during televised golf tournaments.

I recall at one point watching an LPGA pro struggle to clear the bunker after driving her tee shot into the sand. She had no legit shot to clear that trap as she struggled to with the ball above her feet and nothing but her arms working to get the ball above the lip of the bunker, only to see the ball take flight and then trickle down further into the depths of the sand.

It’s great to know that golf pros are human. We need less of the superhero ideology of golf pros. We need to humanize folks who can drive the ball over 300 yards off the tee. But we don’t want to see our heroes knocked down to their knees and taken down a notch or two for jut being human.

Think about the way these guys design some of these golf courses. I mean these modern designs have some brutal expectations of a golfer. The slopes and the cuts and grades of grass combined together to create havoc for golfers. With different types of grass cropping up along the fringe of the hole, you can see how the design of the hole serves as a guardian against the ball’s simple entry to the green.

Watching pros struggle is a reality in today’s game. We just don’t live for those moments as true golf fans. We’d rather see someone conquer the Goliath standing in their way. That gives us inspiration to keep playing.
